We are a small group of people doing our best to meet a growing demand for support for people in our community. Many elderly or unwell people live alone at some distance from family members, and if their mobility becomes a problem, this inevitably leads to increased isolation from their local community.
Befriending as a voluntary activity in Buckfastleigh was first set up many years ago as part of Sharing Buckfastleigh, a highly successful volunteer led local organisation with whom we work closely.
As demand has grown, it has been possible to attract a small amount of NHS funding to help organise these services with a part-time paid coordinator. At this point, it became necessary to create a new organisation, to work alongside Sharing Buckfastleigh, and to take on the responsibility for an NHS contract providing funding for local services. Buckfastleigh Community Care was therefore born, as part of Moorland Community Care Group, a registered charity.
At the current time, the NHS funding for our coordinator is specifically targeted towards providing a Wellbeing Service. This service helps support people who are living alone, are isolated and have more than one health condition. This is a valuable service and the coordinator is required to focus her time on supporting Wellbeing clients.
In order to help manage the day-to-day activities of Buckfastleigh Community Care, we have established a small Organising Group of volunteers. We always welcome new members for this group, to help with volunteer recruitment, matching and assisting the befriending volunteers with any issues they may encounter.
We currently have a tiny pot of money to pay for volunteers’ expenses and the other costs of running an organisation and therefore help with fundraising is also gratefully welcomed to ensure the on-going sustainability of this work.
The people we help are referred by the local GP Surgery, social services, care agencies, local reablement teams, family members or neighbours and clients themselves.
Buckfastleigh Community Care is part of Moorland Community Care Group, which was established in 2016 as a charitable incorporated organisation, or CIO. Moorland community Care Group is registered with the Charity Commission and has registered charity number 1157919. Moorland Community Care Group operates across Bovey Tracey, Ashburton and Buckfastleigh and surrounding areas.
Buckfastleigh Community Care has a coordinator who is charged with the day-to-day running of the service. You can contact the coordinator via Contact Us.
